In Key West, pirates are honored as an important part of the island’s history. Unlike elsewhere in the country, they’re more than just the inspiration for a fun Halloween or Fantasy Fest costume. Their fearsome presence has been interwoven with the development of the island.
Just off the island’s western shore was once the preferred anchorage of a fleet of pirates. Their antics at sea caused so much concern that in 1823 the US Navy tasked Commodore Porter to establish Key West’s first navy base and create the West Indian Squadron to launch an anti-pirate campaign.
It took two years for the fleet of 17 ships and 1,100 men based in Key West to rid the Indies of an estimated 2,000 pirates. Porter’s campaign was considered extremely successful with his leadership credited for stamping out piracy in one of the busiest shipping channels in the world.
