We may have a population sprinkled with a colorful collection of shrimpers, drug runners, musicians, poets, writers, and hippies, but we also have a history as the center of US military activity. The island played an important role in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
Today the coast guard station and naval airbase coexist happily with our modern-day pirates and other quirky characters that make up the funky charm of the island.
