Key West is nowhere near Miami. OK, there might only be166 miles and 42 bridges between us, but we’re a world apart. (If talking miles, we’re much closer to Havana.)
Island life isn’t for everyone, but a lot of mainlanders who make the trek end up staying. To a varying degree they become a Conch at heart. There’s even an unofficial hierarchy of who gets labeled a Conch and when. For those born on the island, there’s no question – they’re a full Conch.
More recent transplants are labeled according to their date of arrival--
After 7 years they’re referred to as a Freshwater Conch. After 15 years they progress to a Saltwater Conch. Of course, marriage or a long-term relationship with a Full Conch has its rewards – you become a Bubba Conch.
