Key West is 8 square miles surrounded by reality.
Running four miles long and about two miles wide at its widest, Key West is a small island. Old Town, the historic district, makes up about half of this area.
Would you ever have guessed that as late as the early 1900’s Key West was Florida’s largest city? In 1900, it had 18,000 residents. For comparison, Fort Lauderdale had 91, West Palm Beach 564, and Miami 1,681.
Key West’s population reached its peak in 1960 with 34,000 residents. Now, it's down to a population of about 26,500.
You must admit that for such a small place, it has a huge attitude!
