Mile Markers in the Keys are incredibly useful when giving directions. But no marker is more important that Mile Marker Zero (0). It represents a lot more than just the beginning (or end) of US Highway 1. It’s also a concept of the haven of Key West that separates it from the mainland. It’s a haven long-known for its acceptance of people of all persuasions and the inspiration for countless artistic expressions. Mile Marker Zero has even given title to at least one book and a band. .
